The month of August has never been a kind to me. The two that follow don’t typically feel too different. Or maybe it's because I had finally heard the full release of an emotional song that hits close to home for me, and I've been waiting to hear it in its entirety since March. But that August night I watched the final episode of Marvelous Mrs. Maisel, I cried. It felt silly. I watched the slideshow of all the different scenes over the last five seasons, raised my hand to wipe the TV screen dark and then I sobbed. I wasn't sure when that was ever going to happen again. I've spent 2 weeks in what's felt like purgatory, trying desperately to simply make it through the day without being committed somewhere in a straight jacket. Depressed, straight basket case. But this morning I woke up without immediate fear and panic... maybe it was the appointment to carve out two chunks of my scalp for a biopsy (wasn't prepared to wake up and go get stitches) or maybe it was the double dose of anxiety medication last night, but either way, I'll take the win. I knew what I was missing, the adventures, the laughing, seeing the pure enjoyment of the moment splashed across their little faces, the stress, the missing shoes, the muddy pants, the chaos. I missed it all. I saw some friends of mine at my job, friends I love, but there was this angry, little, fiery voice inside me, angry that they were there, for hours. Why are you still here? Don't you know of what you're missing with your kids at home? Very few people can understand this kind of painful anguish. If you are a 50%- custody- parent you might. Every single day, every single plan you make, matters. Your days are literally, legally, numbered. Far less than you thought you'd have when you brought them into this world. And fuck it's hard. I came home two and a half hours later than expected. three navigating the divorcee-world of working to build a business, dating and co-parenting, after the collapse of her marriage ended her dedication as a full-time stay at home mother. She grew up within her very close (and large!) extended family in midwest America, built on humble hardwork and pursuit of preserving family values. By the time she graduated high school, she had three different jobs and no intention of continuing her education at age 18. She was climbing in her successful career when she met her future husband. A year into their marriage, she became pregnant with her first born and in her 9th month of pregnancy, she left her job to embark on the greatest privilege of her life, motherhood as a stay at home caregiver. Everything she thought she knew about her life vanished in 2018. She found herself having to start all over from the ground up, but this time as an adult with three little humans, and who hadn’t worked in six years. Adjusting to a life that is 50% of the time momma and 50% of the time solo, Amy has spent the last few years not only learning all sorts of lessons the hard way, but also re-learning who she is and who she wants to be. On one of the tougher days, early in her journey, she found a gift on her doorstep addressed to her. An anonymous gift; a simple and significant gold bracelet with the words “Keep F*cking Going” etched on the inside. Her best friend had sent her the reminder and Amy has kept it on her wrist from that day forward.
